Katherine D. Jones
Katherine D. Jones, Contemporary Romance with a Twist
When did you start to write romance novels?
  • I started in 1997 as a way to keep my sanity. I was on hospital bed rest for 22 weeks.
My wonderful doctor, James Hight, kept me off my feet so that I could have the best
chance of a successful pregnancy. And it worked! I delivered a healthy baby boy on
    September 11, 1997.
During that time I read, read, and read. Finally, it occurred to me that if I wrote
I could throw myself into my own project. I finished the first draft of the novel
during that time then put it away until 2000.

Why do you write romance?
  • I love romance novels because no matter what your hero and heroine go through it
will work out perfectly.  Unlike real life when things happen that make no sense and
often times there is no happy ending, my novels are full of drama, but also most
importantly hope.  My characters always have a lot of faith once they realize what they
    want.

What else do you do aside from writing?
  • Good question!    Some of everything… I’m working part-time between 20-25 hours.
I’m a mom, wife and a Mary Kay Consultant
My first love is to write, though, and no other job will take the place of that in my life.

Do you have a set writing schedule?
  • Yes.

Do you work on more than one project at a time?
  • I always have story ideas rumbling around in my head. I usually have two or three
projects going at any given time.

What are you working on now?
  • Right now I am working on a six-book series about Knight Hunter. That’s all I’ll say for
now, but he is the most intriguing male character I’ve written about to date.

Where do you get your inspiration?
  • I can find a kernel of an idea in just about everything that I see and do. People offer
inspiration without really knowing it. National and local news are both good resources
too. I love to weave international events into my stories. One day I might even sit down
    to write a political thriller.

Who are your favorite authors?
  • Too many to really give justice to a list, but there are several that have influenced my
style or maybe my motivation to write. I love novels by Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy,
John Grisham, and Sidney Sheldon. I grew up reading them and they are must-buy
authors for me. In the romance world: Donna Hill, Rochelle Alers, and Beverly Jenkins
were the first authors that I’d ever read. Many, many authors have followed since and
in the hospital I read a lot of Shannon Drake and Jude Deveraux books.
Today, I still read everyone mentioned above, but I’ve thrown in several more as I’ve
learned and grown in the business.
Some of my author friends include Francine E. Matthews, Maureen Smith, Nathasha
Brooks-Harris, Michelle Monkou, Sylvia Mendoza, and Cindi Louis.
Mentors or women who have really just blessed my life with their generosity are
Rochelle Alers, Shirley Hailstock, Carmen Green, Felicia Mason, Nina Foxx, and Reon
    Laudat.

What are your goals in the writing industry?
  • I would like to become a household name. I’d like to reach millions around the world
with my words. Ultimately, I would love to see my books adapted to film.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
  • I would say stop beginning projects that have no ending. It is important to finish what
you start. Editors depend on your ability to commit to a finished work in a timely
manner. So, for all those half-finished manuscripts and ideas that you have floating
around—make them happy. Finish them and begin to polish them in order to send
them off to either an agent or editor. You can’t make the sale if you don’t submit!

All the best!
